Get under the skin of ‘Animal Farm’
Divine intervention represents Sibikwa Centre For The Arts in bringing you ANIMAL FARM 2011! Teachers will surely remember the acclaimed productions of Maru and Animal Farm which so successfully managed to entertain and educate over 40 000 school pupils in 2009 and 2010. This year, Animal Farm is back, in an intense, participatory theatre-in-education programme, that will come to your school and be brought to life in your school hall or large classroom. Animal Farm is a hardhitting analysis of human society that is understandably used as a setwork in schools around the world. Of course, it has particular relevance to current events in South Africa, which gives the book a greater depth for local students to savour. Sibikwa Arts Centre has created performances and workshops that explore the context in which this timeless work was written, and what it has to say about our contemporary lives and times. Bring the beloved setwork to life The aim of this innovative and interactive production is to engage Grade 12 students with this literary classic, which they are studying as a setwork. The production is divided into two sessions; the first to be performed in April and the second in August, to allow more material to be covered in an in-depth and relevant way. These sessions will present scenes from the book, offer the perspectives of different characters, and explore the historical events that inspired the book, whilst continuously giving the students opportunities to offer their own opinions, comments and ideas about the action. All too often, setworks are studied from a dispassionate distance, but this programme allows students to really get ‘under the skin’ of the book; to put themselves in the shoes of the characters, and truly ‘live’ the narrative process. Students will emerge from the course with a new perspective – not only on this book, but on the entire process of reading, and identifying with the players that make up any book’s drama. How your school can participate The two performance/workshops, each one hour long, will be performed and facilitated at a venue at your school. The cost per learner is R100, which covers both performance/workshops, and learning materials. Performance/workshop ONE: April 13th – May 13th Performance/workshop TWO: July 26th – August 13th Allow your students to fully explore Animal Farm by taking part in this unique course.
