Don't expect crass Anglo American stand-up comedy when you start your year with laughter as the wacky Belgian Gaëtan Schmid (The Dog’s Bollocks and Rumpsteak) finally makes his bow on a Johannesburg stage with his solo show BODY LANGUAGE. This presentation is given in the greatest European and intellectual tradition where the double entendre en the subtle sting at the end of the phrase is what should tickle the funny bone.At the preview we went along to see, less than half the audience got the humour. In fact, there were quite a number of puzzled looks around and, if you burst out in a fit of laughter, you invariably had someone look around at you with a question mark on the face. Most definitely not run-of-the-mill comedy and Daphne Kuhn, once again, must be congratulated for her courage in bringing new innovative and informative works to the stage. What a lady, what a theatre!
BODY LANGUAGE sold out in Cape Town, sold out at the National Arts Festival and sold out at the Hilton Festival and the production opened at the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square teh past week and will run until 4th February (see showtimes below).
BODY LANGUAGE is a brand new, hilarious and informative comedy by South Africa’s leading edutainment comedian and physical theatre expert, Gaetan Schmid. Gaëtan, in his very own peculiar and particular way, will entertain you on a fascinating subject - the secret language of the human body. Fascinating because, even if you don’t want it, your body talks and talks and talks and talks … and it won’t ever shut up! Who ever thought that the human body could be so funny? Even the lowly goose bump gets a laugh in his masterful hands!
Anthropologically, sociologically, biologically, psychologically, neurologically but not so logically; Gaëtan will analyse the provenance of everyday gestures. Aside from its intellectual and stimulating subject matter, audiences who attend a performance of BODY LANGUAGE might also pick up a trick or two on how to “read” others - a boss, a spouse or even that ‘interesting’ person at the bar!
Underneath its irreverent and comedic narrative, BODY LANGUAGE’s social message is of ever increasing importance: human interaction and communication. Our entire societal system is based on communication. If we can improve the quality of our communication we will improve the quality of our society.
